Revolut to block credit card payments to gambling sites in Ireland

Revolut has announced that it will block credit cards from being used on gambling sites in Ireland. Currently, the famous fintech operator has 1.5 million users in Ireland.

This comes as part of an investigation led by the daily newspaper – Irish Independent. The main issue here is that Revolut and other payment solutions can be charged with credit cards. This way, players can play on gambling sites even if they are prohibited from doing so.

A representative from Revolut said that the fintech company is “planning to block the use of credit card funds on gambling sites in Ireland.” Gambling companies have responded to the news that a loophole exists in Ireland that allows customers to do so, but in the UK, it is forbidden.

The Irish Bookmakers Association (IBA) denies any rule-breaking. They also stated that they used the law to allow consumers to charge their accounts in the most convenient way. The Government explained that they do not consider this a crime and continued by saying it’s up to the IBA to determine.
